    About the Ride

The Back Roads Century is one of the premier cycling events in the mid-Atlantic region. Each fall, Potomac Pedalers invites cycling enthusiasts of all ages and abilities for a great weekend of riding and fun. The Back Roads Century features multiple distances, up to a full 100-mile ride.  Every distance is a fully-supported ride with route directions/cue sheets, route markings, rest stops every 20-25 miles with delicious food and drinks - including our famous tomato sandwiches - as well as mechanical and first aid support during your ride. This year's cue sheets will also note historical and habitat information at different points along the routes.

The Back Roads Century returns for its third year to beautiful Shepherdstown, West Virginia, a quaint yet vibrant town with an extremely warm and welcoming atmosphere.  Located just across the bridge from the Antietam Battlefield, history buffs and regular travelers alike will find Shepherdstown's historical allure a perfect complement to the charm and variety readily abundant at every turn in town.  The Back Roads Century begins at Shepherd University and many routes will follow parts of the Potomac River, with rolling hills taking you past apple orchards and lush farmlands.

After Sunday’s ride, join us for our "End of Ride Celebration" at Popodicon, the historic former residence of the Chancellor of Shepherd University.  The event will feature delicious food prepared locally, as well as live entertainment that will have you up on your feet even after riding for hours.  Walking or riding distance to parking and showers.

Make It a Weekend with Saturday Rides & Fun

Stay overnight and enjoy the great restaurants, great bars with live music, and unique shopping in Shepherdstown. We will be offering two free rides on Saturday, September 16, that will include tours of local Civil War sites commemorating the 155th anniversary of the Battle of Antietam. One route will be around 15 miles on relatively flat roads. The second route will be around 35 miles and include some hillier roads. We'll have more specific details on these rides in about a month. While both rides are free, we will have active bike marshals and other support in enjoying the breathtaking scenery and historic landscapes.

These rides are open to all club members, whether you are participating in the BRC or not, and are part of the Club’s regular and ongoing ride schedule.

We are also partnering with local businesses and organizations to offer specially tailored entertainment featuring local artists, historic/environmental landmarks and local merchants throughout the weekend. These events will be catered to both cyclists and any of their non-bicycling companions.

Cap off your Saturday with a party in Shepherdstown with  music.  Relax and fuel up for the ride on Sunday while soaking up the atmosphere in Shepherdstown.

So if you’re looking for a challenging, rewarding and fun way to spend a beautiful fall day or two, be sure to participate in the 2017 Back Roads Century. We’d love to see you there!

    • Midnight Brewery, 2410 Granite Ridge Rd, Rockville, VA 23146

    Tour de Midnight

Tour de Midnight supports the Epilepsy Foundation of Virginia.  This event will be held on October 14 (Saturday), 2017.  The event is composed of a 50k ride and a 100k ride, both through the scenic countryside of Goochland and Hanover Counties.  The 100K ride goes out to Lake Anna and back.

The start and finish of each ride is at Midnight Brewery (hence the name), a small, family owned and operated micro-brewery in Rockville, Virginia.  The rides start in the morning and finish at the brewery to a party with live band and food trucks.

Last year (our first year) we had 225 riders with many friends and family joining the party after the rides.  It was a lot of fun and a nice success, but we would like to do even better this year.

The funds we are able to raise through registration, sponsorships and team fund-raising help support the many ways that Epilepsy Foundation of Virginia helps the more than 80,000 people in our Commonwealth who have epilepsy.  EFVA provides training and education to teachers, school bus drivers, police and firefighters; we help clients attain emergency medications when they need it; our Regional Directors provide all manner of guidance and support, including programs that are both educational and social; we assist clients with the procurement of seizure dogs when that is what is needed to help a child or an adult live a better life.  We do all of this at no cost to the client/patient.

Midnight Brewery is about an hour’s drive from Fredericksburg.  Our registration website is already up and running for 2017 and we are offering a discount to all who register before April 1.  To register to ride, donate or just to learn more about Tour de Midnight, go to: www.bikereg.com/tourdemidnight
