Tour de Somerville Beat the Heat Ride (0730)

  • 17 Jul 2016
  • 7:30 AM
  • Willowmere Park, 21 Willowmere Pond Rd, Stafford, VA

NOTE:  0730 start

Tour De Somerville with short section of excellent gravel! 44 Miles

This is a new route that for at least 2/3 of the route will put us on roads not normally ridden on FCC club rides but certainly still in the area we all know well.  The course is NOT marked, nor ever will be, so down load a cue sheet and navigate on your own or stay with the leader!

With 2000' of elevation gain over 44 miles the terrain is best describe as lumpy in places and undulating for the rest of the course.  If you have a GPS please download the route from the link below and get turn by turn instructions. The venerable Elk Run Store is at the 15 mile point if a stop is required.

There is a 1.8 mile section of a fine gravel road suitable for the intermediate rider on a road bike with road tires.  An option exist to stay on a paved road to bypass this section and both groups will come back together after this section.  Think of it as a pave section in Paris Roubaix...lots of fun for the intermediate rider to experience riding on gravel at speed for a short distance.

Skyline Drives also provides a fun finish to this ride as you cross a series of easy rollers to the run in back to Willowmere Park

This is a self-supported ride and everyone should be equipped to ride and navigate this course on their own at their own pace.

Directions - Travel US 17 North from I-95 4.3 miles. Turn right on Rt 616 Popular Rd. Travel 6.8 miles and turn right on Mountain View Rd (across from old country store). Go 0.6 miles and turn right onto Willowmere Pond Rd. Go 0.1 miles and turn right into park. Proceed straight into large parking lot.
