Skyline Drive Ride UPDATE
DUE TO UNEXPECTED DIGNITARIES AND CLOSURES AT DICKEY RIDGE, WE ARE SHIFTING THE START LOCATION.
Ride Name: Skyline Drive Climbing Practice Pace: ABC Meeting Location: Thorton Gap Trailhead Time: 9 am
Please read the information below carefully! It is recommended that you register for this ride and/or contact the ride leader the night before to let her know to expect you.
Come out for an early-season day of out-and-back climbing practice (and descents!) on Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park.
If you also have a current National Park pass please let the ride leader know ahead of time and bring it with you. Otherwise, there is a $15 entrance fee for individuals cycling in who do not have a pass.
Everybody climbs at different speeds, so the plan is to regroup at each summit before continuing. The ride leader makes absolutely no claims of being an especially speedy climber but is actively working on it (see above: "practice"); manage expectations accordingly.
We will roll at 9 am from the Thorton Gap Trailhead.
The ride leader intends to go to the Big Meadow trailhead (with restrooms!) before turning back to the start and continuing on to Elk Wallow for a total of about 63 miles.
There will be opportunities for water refills and a stop at the Elkwallow Wayside and Thorton Gap Trailhead. Plan your clothing layers, nutrition, and electrolytes accordingly. Keep a challenging ride and the day's weather conditions in mind. Optional meetup location in Front Royal for post-ride food TBD.
If the weather forecast seems questionable in terms of temperature or precipitation, the call to cancel or ride will be made by 8 pm the night before.
RWGPS route: Thornton Gap Trailhead to Big Meadow and back
Ride Leader: Chuck Daniels, 816-500-7468
